Description
This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. This photo shows a large family in the countryside. There are seven people in total in the photo; the women and girls are wearing their light coloured summer dresses. A young woman stands to the far left with an older woman beside her. An older man is standing to her left. This older couple are likely the parents. Two girls stand in the centre of the photo. The youngest girl is holding a baby doll in her arms. Two young men are standing to the girls' left; one of them is showing off a bicycle.

A wire fence surrounds the front yard. A team of horses harnessed together is standing to the far left. The house is constructed with cut stone. It has a long verandah with gingerbread details and a central dormer decorated with bargeboard. The date "1902" is visible under the roof peak above the curved dormer window, this is likely the year the house was built. Potted plants can be seen sitting on the window sill to the left.

The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.

This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1084. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County.
