- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows five people posing in front of a brick farmhouse. A man and a woman are posing with a small child and two men stand to their right beside a woven wire fence. The house is a storey and a half with an arched window in the central dormer. Potted plants sit on the window sills in the house. Note the entryway to the root cellar attached to the house.
A large barn is behind the house to the right. Hay can be seen spilling out of the open hayloft at the top of the building. A team of horses are attached to a hay wagon behind the two men. A straw cutter can be seen to the right of the horses. There is a large pile of straw sitting in the barnyard; it is possibly harvesting season.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1069. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Fair - Image is very clear. A cracks runs from the top centre edge of the glass plate towards the bottom left corner, spans entire height of plate. Sliver of glass missing from lower left corner. Moderate oxidation along outer edges of negative, most severe in upper left and lower left corners (2.5cm at widest point). Residue along bottom left edge (2.5cm width).
