- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a family and their homestead. A man and woman are sitting in rocking chairs outside of their house. A dog sits between them. A little girl is standing to the far right posing with a baby doll and buggy. A boy is standing to the far left holding the lead of a horse. The family is well-dressed.
Unfortunately a large portion of the house is missing from the image due to damage to the original negative. The house is covered in shiplap style boards and has a porch at the back with what appears to be an addition. Several outbuildings can be seen in the background behind the house; with a barn to the right. The barnyard is enclosed with a wood rail fence.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1067. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Poor - Image is clear in the visible areas. No damage to glass plate. Minor oxidation along right edge of negative (width: <1cm). Severe emulsion loss on negative in several areas including small spots in the upper corners, an area in the upper right quadrant (totally length: 8cm and width: 3.4cm). A small spot of emulsion loss near left edge in lower left quadrant. Worst emulsion loss is in the centre of the plate, in the shape of a horizontal "Y" (length: 14cm, width: 7cm). Emulsion is cracking and flaking in these areas. Small amount of red material has adhered to the centre of the negative. Severe scratching to negative surface in lower right quadrant.
