Description
This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. A group of nine people are posed in front of a board and batten farm house. Two older women are seated for the photo with a young boy standing between them. An older man and a young man are standing behind the women, with two girls to their right and two to their left. Three horses stand near the family, two are harnessed and yoked together.

The house is a storey and a half with an arched Romanesque window in the central dormer. The door is deep-set with sidelights and a transom window. Two lightning rods can be seen on the roof of the home. A small addition is at the back of the house, possibly used as a summer kitchen. Potted plants have been placed on the interior window sills and on the ledge above the foundation on the outside of the house. The ledge is a sign of preparation for the exterior to possibly be bricked in the future.

The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.

This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1054. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County.
