- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a family posing in front of their rural brick home. The home is a storey and a half and provides an example of Flemish brick bonding, not commonly seen in rural houses in Ontario. An arched Romanesque window sits in the central dormer of the house. Angled brick headers are above the windows and doorway. The house appears to be sitting on a hilltop and is surrounded by a picket fence with decorative fence posts at the corners.
A bearded man wearing suspenders is standing behind the fence. A woman is sitting in a chair on the grass in front of the picket fence with a young girl and a small child posing on a rocking horse to her right. The child's clothing appears nautical in its theme; nautical elements were commonly used in fashion in this period. An infant is sitting in the woman's lap.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1013. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
