- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photograph shows what appears to be a rural family posing in front of a clapboard house. The family is possibly the Calder family of East Nissouri; however, there is currently no substantial evidence confirming this. A man and a woman are seated in chairs on the grass. The pair are presumably the parents of the three children included in the photo. A young man is sitting with his back against the house and his arm around a dog. There are two chicks walking around the feet of the woman and girl to the right. The house is a storey and a half, unpainted and has no front porch. It is an example of the simple yet functional farmhouses commonly seen in the early 20th century. The return eaves on the roof are an example of a decorative classical feature. A wood lean-to addition can be seen at the back of the house, possibly used as a summer kitchen.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 974. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Very Good - Little to no damage to glass plate. Slight oxidation around outer edge of plate, concentrated in upper left quadrant (1.2cm at widest point). Dark smear across surface of emulsion in bottom half of negative (approx. 9cm across). Light scratches on surface, deepest in upper right corner (3.5cm). Minor damage to emulsion in lower left corner and more significant damage along right edge (length: 9.5cm).
