- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. It features a brick house in the countryside along with a young man and woman posing in front of the building; both individuals are well-dressed. The house is a storey and a half with a long wood frame addition at the back of the home. The house features a front verandah with decorative carved brackets on the posts. A tiered plant stand filled with potted plants and flowers is set out on the grass near the rear addition. Vines are growing up the verandah and the brick wall of the house. Rhubarb appears to be growing beneath the vines. A barn is visible in the background with a windmill atop the roof. The windmill would have provided power to run equipment inside the barn - for functions such as chopping feed for livestock.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 953. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Excellent - Image is very clear. Discolouration due to oxidation around all outer edges. Scratch across glass plate surface (9.5cm). Small amount of emulsion loss in upper left quadrant.
