Description
This photo gives a view of a steam engine wreck on the Grand Trunk Railway's main line that occurred on September 4, 1900. Milton Reesor, a local amateur photographer, was able to capture the scene after the accident. Bystanders are standing around the wreck. A large amount of debris has been strewn about the embankment.

The accident occurred when a heavy freight train heading west stalled on the grade approaching the Sarnia Bridge. The steam engine reversed to prepare for a second attempt and was standing on the bridge when a second freight train came around the sharp curve a few hundred yards east of the grade. The engineer failed to spot the stalled locomotive ahead and collided into the caboose. The caboose, a freight car and the second steam engine were all badly damaged.

A wrecking crew arrived from Stratford to clean up the site. The St. Marys "Journal" newspaper reported that the noise of the collision was so loud it was heard across town. This photo is one in a set of three showing the derailment.
