- Description
- This grand two-storey was built for Dr. John Hugh Mathieson in 1874. Mathieson lived in the home with his wife Mary, daughter of early settlers Milner Harrison and Catherine Howard. Dr. John H. Mathieson was a prominent member of the St. Marys community, known not only for his profession but for his influence in the building of the current Town Hall.
The Mathieson house is an example of a late 19th century home built in the Italianate style. Well-known St. Marys architect Robert Barbour was responsible for the design of the house. A distinct feature of the home is the Italianate veranda and storm-porch, still surviving to this day. The veranda wraps around the west and south facades between two prominent bay windows. Shutters have been restored to the second-storey windows, and the veranda, balcony and storm-porch have all been repainted since the time of this photograph, taken in the early 1970s. This house is a historically designated structure.
