Description
This house is known as one of Fanny Adam’s four cottages built after her husband’s death. Fanny was a St. Marys resident married to John Adam, a tavern keeper of the St. Marys Empire Hotel. After her husband’s passing, she took over her husband’s role as proprietor of the hotel. Prior to John Adam’s death, four lots were put in Fanny’s name. Sometime after 1866, Fanny, now a widow, erected houses on the lots and built this stone house at 106 Wellington Street North. Robert Barbour, a prominent local architect and builder, is believed to have built all four houses for Fanny. The house was rented to Fanny’s sister Margaret Beattie and Margaret's husband local merchant Alexander Beattie. Margaret eventually purchased the house in 1887. Fanny’s second marriage to flax merchant John McArthur Weir led to his joint ownership of the properties; however, Fanny maintained authority over the houses.

This one storey stone house is a generous size and contains ornate detailing that adds distinction to the home. The house is topped with an overlaid hip roof, a recessed front door and a protruding bow widow on the right side of the home. The bow window is surrounded by ornamental white trim. Since the time this photo was taken, changes have been made to the façade, including the addition of a rounded portico over the entrance.
