- Frank E. Butcher, a prominent local businessman, built all four houses on the southwest corner of Jones and St. Andrews Streets, including this home located at 44 St. Andrew Street South, built in 1898. F.E. Butcher’s son, jeweler Ellison Butcher, lived in this house for some time. The house remained in the Butcher family until the 1950s. The house was converted to a bed and breakfast in the 1980s, and it remains a B&B to this day.
This frame house is a version of the Queen Anne style popular in the late 19th century to early 20th century. Queen Anne style homes often featured a prominent tower at a corner of the house, which can be seen on this particular structure. The house originally had trim painted in a darker contrast colour, which has now been painted over with a solid colour as seen in this photo. The house includes details such as the decorative fretwork on the veranda, a rounded stained glass window, and scalloped shingling near the top of the tower.
