- Description
- The house built at 181 Queen Street West, was built for Joseph McDougall sometime between 1860 and 1861. It was first constructed as a one-story brick cottage. McDougall co-owned the St. Marys Iron Foundry & Machine Shop, which manufactured farming implements and other machinery castings. By 1866, John Robertson owned the property and sold it to Cuthbert McCallum, a druggist, who later moved to London with his wife in 1874. Edward William Harding was the next owner of the house. Harding owned a law office in St. Marys known as Harding, Harding & White. The property was eventually turned over to Harding’s wife, Caroline Harding in 1903. Later owners included business owners Neil M. Currie and William B. Young respectively.
The second-storey of the house was added in 1909 by the Currie family. The second-storey is shingled, contrasting its brick lower storey. The original brick colour of the house is light orange, painted a darker red in this photo. The paint has since been removed. The house features a large enclosed veranda and a balustrade second-storey balcony. Note the circular attic window at the top of the house and the diamond patterns in the upper storey windows. Since the time of this photo, the porch has been opened up and the width of the upper balcony reduced in size.
