Description

This two-storey white brick house, built in 1857, is Neo-Classically styled in many of its features, giving the house a clean exterior appearance. The geometric arch detail on the transom over the doorway adds distinction. The home was originally a salmon coloured brick; however, it is believed that the house was painted white by the year 1926. This house is a historically designated structure.

The house was built for David Smith. It was one of the earliest brick homes to be built in St. Marys, as most houses were either built of wood or limestone at that time. The house has had several notable St. Marys citizens residing in it over the years. John Robinson, a civil engineer known for his design of the Grand Trunk viaduct, was an owner of the home for many years. Robert D. Eaton, the elder brother of successful merchant Timothy Eaton, lived in the house from 1880 to 1885. James D. Moore, a well-known produce dealer, was also a resident. The house eventually became known as the Maxwell Home, as Harold Maxwell and his wife Frances, purchased the house in 1932. The Maxwell family lived in the house until 1985.

Condition: Excellent - Original image is very clear. Little damage to photo paper. A minute amount of adhesive residue on the back of the photo.
