- Description
- The house located at 229 Elizabeth Street was first owned by Thomas Woolway, a local grain merchant, who was granted the property by George Tracy in 1868. By 1876, the property had been granted by Woolway to William Lester of Granton. Lester rented the house out to Robert Grant. The property was owned by at least eight different families over a time period of a hundred years.
White two story houses such as this are a common sight in Ontario. However, this particular home includes architectural touches that were specifically characteristic to houses in St. Marys. The house features an exterior chimney, which can be seen on the left exterior wall. Note the second-storey veranda, the geometric patterned porch railing, and the fretwork frills on the porch overhang.
