This photo appears to be a crop of a larger photo, the cropping removed a large portion of the house and four other people. The lighter line across the bottom of the photo is one rail of a railraod track.
The other photo was captioned as "A Standard Chemical House". Standard Chemical is known to have had quite a few houses rented to employees, several of which are still on Howard Ave.
