Description
This stereoscopic view depicts the excavations for the new lock at Port Colborne for the Third Welland Canal between 1876 and 1880. The photo was taken looking north from a temporary trestle bridge across the excavation. In the background, from left to right, is the Grand Trunk Railway’s swing bridge over the north end of the Second Welland Canal lock, the shanty for the bridge tender, the railway line, and part of the Commercial Hotel on East St. To the left of the excavation is the Second Canal lock.
Notes
The condition of the stereoscopic view is poor, as is the original image quality.
