Black-and-white group portrait of the 1939-1940 Oshawa Generals hockey team.
Notes
The Oshawa Generals spent their early years playing in the Ontario Hockey Association as the Oshawa Shamrocks (1908). By the 1930s, the Shamrocks became known as the Oshawa Majors, winning the OHA title in 1935. In 1937, the Oshawa Generals were born. Winning three Memorial Cups in the first seven years, the team named after General Motors of Canada (its chief sponsor) began to graduate players to the NHL. Unfortunately tragedy struck when Hambley's Arena burned down in 1953, leaving the team homeless. Much like a phoenix, the team rose from the ashes of the arena fire to be reborn in 1962. Because of the new arena, Oshawa Civic Auditorium, which was to open in 1964, the team regained steam playing its homegames at Maple Leaf Gardens for the season prior to the opening of their new arena. After making themselves at home in the Oshawa Civic Auditorium, the team played host to two of the most famous alum of the late twentieth century: Bobby Orr, and Eric Lindros. In 2006, under new management, the Generals moved into their current home at the southernmost point of Mary Street, the General Motors Centre.
