- Notes
- Hurricane Hazel is one of the most infamous storms in Southern Ontario history. On October 15, 1954, after it was supposed to have calmed down, the hurricane intensified and left a huge path of destruction throughout the Toronto area. With 110km/hour winds, and dropping 300 million tons, the storm left nearly 4000 people homeless. The reconstruction cost Ontario $100 million, which is about $1 billion by today's standards. Besides the financial costs, the provincial government reacted to the hurricane by making amendments to the Conservation Authorities Act.
