The Oshawa Spring and Axle plant on Ritson Rd. N. Oshawa was not big compared to other local plants. As a boy I would go the plant on Fridays to get my dad's pay cheque so my mother could bank it before 3 pm when all banks closed.

My father worked at this plant for 41 years. He worked an open oven spring coiler which was like working at the gates of hell. Many people may not know that this shop was the very first auto related industry in Oshawa to be unionized under the AFL/CIO, just before GM got its charter.

My father was a worker, and a union organiser, he travelled to all the other company's factories as well to Toronto to deal and sign working contracts with these companies for all the workers. He believed that workers should be treated paid and respected.

My father's name was Alexander J. Beatty. He was born in Oshawa, served in World War Two, raised a family in Oshawa and passed in Oshawa. Am I proud of him for his vision? Yes I am. Eric N. Beatty, his only son.
