- Description
- This is a black and white photo of a three-story home locally known as "the Castle". The building exterior appears to be covered in a swirling material of unknown composition.
The house has large arched top windows and the main door is framed by smaller arched windows and glass sidelights. The entire house has dark trim and has several gabled windows on the third level.
- Notes
- Notes at the bottom of the photo read:"McEwen's Castle, Built 1886 by Norman McEwen. Torn Down 1949-50."
The home was built in 1897 by Norman McEwan, a brother of William and Andrew McEwan. The first tenants were Mr. W. A. McEwan and family who took in boarders and later rented apartments.
It was later used as a hospital but the approach to the building made it very difficult to get the patients in and out. As there were no stairs over the rocks, you simply had to pick your way up to the house.
After its use as a hospital a few rooms remained rented out and in later years Mr. George Rhodes who owned a mill in Thessalon, resided in the house with his family. He is believed to be the last tenant.
The castle is believed to have been demolished in 1945 when it was said to be owned by Harry Phillips. - Date of Original
