- A resident of Lindsay, Calvin Nichols did his first paper sculpture in 1985. A member of the Society of Animal Artists, he launched his Wildlife Series in 1989 and earned the Society’s Award of Excellence for his paper sculpture “Hawkeye.”

- Artist statement on reverse: "In 1981, upon completing my first attempt to build a cedar strip canoe, I enjoyed my new access to the many nesting areas of the Nongvon River west of Seagrave, Ont. Spring saw flocks o mallards and woodies returning but it was the massive wings and raucous hawking of the Canada goose that drew my attention. Jan. 1998"

- In 1987 the Newmarket Public Library (NPL) was very fortunate to be the beneficiary of a donation intended for works of art and books relating to art by Dorothy and Jim Bowman and their daughter Carol Bowman. The funds were invested in trust for this purpose until 1998 when a collection of works of art was selected and purchased to form a permanent gallery in the Library.
