Born in Zurich, Switzerland, raised there and in the United States (Lawrence, Kansas and Grosse Pointe, Michigan), Rudolf came to Canada in 1967, earned degrees in English and Journalism at Ottawa’s Carleton University. A year in London, England, designing for the Fringe Theatre preceded four years at the Ontario College of Art (including two in Florence, Italy), graduating in 1978. Further art studies in Mexico and at London’s St. Martin’s School of Art followed.

He taught art for the Scarborough Board of Education, Cedar Ridge Creative Centre and O.C.A. (Ontario College of Art) while exhibiting in Europe and Canada.

From 1988-1991 Stussi was president of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, founding the Diploma Collection, Canada’s first national watercolour collection, and organizing International Waters, the first ever joint showing of the Royal Watercolour Society, the American Watercolor Society and the CSPWC, which toured three countries.

In 1989 Stussi was artist in residence at Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic; in 1991, at Canada’s renowned McMichael Collection.

In 1987 he became involved in animation with Toronto’s Nelvana Ltd. as well as European and American firms, including supervising production in Manila (Philippines), Shenzhen (China) and Seoul (Korea). He art directed the popular TV series Little Bear, Rolie-Polie-Olie (working closely with Maurice Sendak and William Joyce), Max & Ruby, and the feature film Heidi. Elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, a monograph by Canadian critic Paul Duval was published in 1998, followed by two children’s books including a new Swiss edition of the classic ‘Heidi’. ‘Hula-Hula’ by Marc Vincenz and illustrated by Stussi is due to be published in 2009 in Shanghai.

Rudolf Stussi is represented by galleries in Berlin (Germany), Zurich, Chur, Kusnacht, Zurich, Basel, Ascona (all Switzerland), Hall (Austria), Toronto and Halifax, Canada. In 2005 he was guest exhibitor at the H.R.Giger Museum in Gruyeres, Switzerland. He taught in Toronto at OCAD and Max the Mutt Animation School among others. His seventh solo exhibition in Berlin opened in 2009. He lives in Switzerland and Canada and is currently painting, and teaches at the Fine Arts Studio at Centennial College in Toronto which he coordinated from 2005-2008.
