- Description
- A reproduced print from an original photograph by an unidentified photographer, showing the cityscape from the roof of St. Paul's Cathedral on Richmond Street looking north towards St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and beyond. In the left foreground beyond St. Paul's rectory can be seen a sign for "The Golden Pitcher" on Richmond Street.
- Notes
- We know the original photograph was taken prior to 1885 when the present St. Peter's Basilica Cathedral was opened. It was built further back on the same site facing Dufferin Avenue whereas it predecessor, built in 1852 and originally called St. Lawrence Church faced Richmond Street. When the Diocese of London was created in 1856 St. Lawrence Church was renamed St. Peter's. The Bishop's Palace, home to Roman Catholic bishops from the 1870's to 1914 can be seen to the right of St. Peter's.
The Bishop's Palace was built in 1871 which also helps to give a time frame for the original image. - Inscriptions
