Although this woman's hair style is somewhat severe and old fashioned, I suspect this photo dates from about 1868-1871, simply due to her sleeves. It also appears she's wearing a soft-bustled skirt, rather than the cage or hoops popular before this time. She also seems to have cameo or cameo-like bracelet cuffs on her wrists. This style of jewellery became more fashionable from about 1870 on. Finally, I think that she may be holding a double picture frame, rather than a book as it doesn't seem to contain pages, but does appear to be a hard frame.
