- A formally posed Carte-de-Visite, black and white portrait of John Arthur Balkwill as a young man, from the photography studio of J.H. Griffiths of London, Ontario. John A. Balkwill, the son of William and Martha Balkwill, was born May 23, 1842 (according to his Ontario death certificate). In the 1883 London City Directory there is an entry for J.A. Balkwill who is listed as a bookkeeper for William Kelly & Sons. John Arthur Balkwill died October 10, 1908.

- On the reverse a handwritten inscription identifies the subject. The photographer's information is printed on the back as well.
