- Description
- A Carte-de-Visite of William Balkwill, Junior, taken at Frank Cooper's photography studio in London, Ontario. The black and white portrait shows a youngish man with a full moustache and mutton chop sideburns in a double breasted suit jacket.
William Balkwill, Junior was the son of William Balkwill and Martha Brooks of England. The senior Mr. Balkwill was responsible for establishing the Hope Hotel in the 1840s at the southwest corner of Dundas and Talbot Streets where the John Labatt Centre opened in 2002. After the Hope Hotel burned in January 1865, William Balkwill, Senior opened the Balkwill House at the northwest corner of King and Talbot Streets at the opposite end of the block. - Notes
- On the reverse is the ornate trademark of Frank Cooper as well as a handwritten identification of the subject of the portrait.
The map location shows where the John Labatt Centre stands today covering the area where the Hope Hotel and the Balkwill House would have existed.
