- Description
- A formal head and shoulders portrait of Charles Priddis.
- Notes
- Charles Trump Priddis was a dry goods merchant whose sons, James and George, later carried on the business by establishing Priddis Brothers ca. 1875. The 1874-75 London City Directory lists the business as Charles Priddis & Sons, dry goods, and the 1875 directory lists Priddis Brothers, dry goods.
Charles Priddis' farm, called Brook Farm, was, at that time, on the northern outskirts of the city. In later years St. Joseph's Orphanage adjoined the property.
Born in England June 13, 1819, Charles and his family came to London, Ontario in 1849. He died March 13, 1881 at the age of 62 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery. His death notice in the London Advertiser March 14, 1881, gives the address of the family residence as 471 Waterloo Street. This is the location that has been marked on the map.
Portraits of Charles' wife, Harriet Williams Priddis, and his daughter Miss Harriet Priddis also appear in this digital image gallery.
This is an undated Carte-de-Visite from Frank Cooper's studio. Given the age of Mr. Priddis in the photograph, it's possible that it was taken ca. 1874-1881.
The photographer's ornate imprint is on the back of the card. There is also a handwritten inscription on the back. - Inscriptions
