- Description
- A formal black & white head and shoulders portrait thought to be of Archdeacon Francis Williams Sandys from the studio of photographer John Cooper. Francis Williams Sandys, born in Ireland in 1815 came to Canada as an Anglican missionary in 1845. As a saddle-bag preacher he rode a 150 mile circuit in the Waddilove Mission but later in his career he was designated as an archdeacon of the Diocese of Huron by Bishop Cronyn. His career spanned fifty years of service including rector to St. Paul's Church in Chatham and its successor, Christ Church. He died in Chatham in 1894. A lengthy article on Archdeacon Sandys appeared in the London Free Press history column: "Looking Over Western Ontario", April 22, 1944, p.39.
