- Description
- Viewed through the trees on the north bank of the Thames River, this black and white non-glossy print gives us a panoramic scene towards the east with the old steel Byron Bridge and a mill in the left background. To the right of the mill, a tall chimney rises through the trees. Immediately to the left of the mill, in the distance,a light coloured structure on the river may be the dam at Springbank Park. The grassy flats on the south bank lead up to several residential houses and outbuildings which are nestled among mature trees.
- Notes
- The inscription is handwritten on the reverse of the card mounted photograph.
This photograph is one of five similar sized, card mounted scenes of the Byron area in the London Room Photograph Collection, which suggests that they may have been taken by the same photographer around the same time.
The mill seen in this print is probably the Ross Grist Mill which was swept downstream in the flood of 1937. The chimney behind the mill would have belonged to the Ross Sawmill. The bridge in this photograph was built in 1904/1905 with cement supports and a steel superstructure consisting of a single span. It was demolished and replaced in 1965.
