- Description
- This glossy, card mounted, sepia toned photograph shows two young hunters, possibly John Hood (left) with his younger brother, Frank Hood shooting at the edge of the Thames River somewhere near London.
- Notes
- Most of the inscription is handwritten in pencil on the back of the original card mounted photograph, but J. HOOD is stamped in ink. In a June 20, 1947 London Free Press article titled "Recalls Shooting Turkey at Dundas and Richmond" the then 83 year old John Hood reminisces on a return visit to London from British Columbia about his past exploits as a Riel Rebellion veteran with the 7th Fusiliers in 1885, and his early life in London as a pioneer stage mechanic, picture framer and photographer. The article states that John, son of F.J. Hood, was born in 1864, joined the 7th Fusiliers in 1884 and left London permanently in 1891 to settle on the west coast. This may have been the guideline for the dates (1885-1890)written on the reverse of the photograph.
According to the 1881 Ontario census, John Hood, son of Frederick and Sarah Hood, was 16 years old with an older brother Thomas, 20 and five younger brothers, Frederick, 12, George, 9, Frank, 7, William, 5 and Robert, 2 months old. Based on this information it would seem plausible that the date of the photograph could be about 1884 when the younger boy Frank would have been about 10 years old. It also seems likely that the older male in the photograph could be Thomas Hood if John Hood was actually taking the picture or perhaps Thomas was behind the camera this time.
