Quite possibly Buffalo Mead was made from the fruit of the buffalo-berry bushes (Shepherdia argetea). The berries are small. Apparently one needs to wait till after a good frost for them to taste good(they are bitter till then). Beware, the bushes are thorny. If you don't want to use them to make mead, they apparently make terrific jelly (jam).
