- Description
- A black and white photograph of the interior of J. Tune & Son's London Soda Water Works factory. In the left foreground a serious looking mustached gentleman with a pocket watch chain dangling from his vest stands peering at the photographer. Behind him to the left in the photograph are rough wooden and metal tables supporting various apparatus with tubing running up towards the ceiling. On the first table a wooden box appears to be full of capped bottles. Two men appear to be at work at the tables and three other aproned men/boys stand in the background beside two large rectangular tubs. The room appears to have brick walls and a timber ceiling and an open set of wooden stairs are located on the rear wall.
- Notes
- The inscription which does not appear with the digital copy was added in 1939. The original photograph was included with an advertisement for J. Tune & Son, 145 & 147 York Street (south side) and lists an alternative name for the company: London Soda Water Works. The products listed are: ginger ale, double soda, plain soda, cream soda, lemon soda, sarsaparilla, crab apple champagne cider, phosphated champagne sherbet, standard nerve food, buffalo mead, pure apple cider, St. Leon mineral water and Georgian Springs mineral water. The 1890 City of London directory lists James & Charles Tune living at 128 York Street in the same block as the company but on the north side of the street whereas the Soda Works is listed at 145 York Street on the south side. The Fire Insurance Plans for London, 1892 edition updated to 1907, shows the J. Tune & Son, London Soda Water Factory at 132-134 York Street, north side.
