Wesleyan Methodism in Upper Canada. RYAN, HENRY

The first camp meeting was held on the south

shore of Hay Bay in 1805, and among the preachers

were Revs. Henry Ryan and William Case. Ryan

was quick at repartee. On one occasion a village

wag, one of a crowd, asked him if he had heard the

news. "What news ?” "Why," said the wag, “that

the devil is dead." "Ah, well,” responded Ryan,

looking around the crowd,“he has. indeed, left

a great many fatherless children.“

Henry Ryan began his itinerant life is 1800,

and after travelling for 5 yrs. in the New York

Conference, was sent to Canada, in company with

William Case.
