Description

Card mounted glossy aerial photograph of the buildings on Thames Street at the end of King Street. The King Street bridge over the Thames River can be seen in the background. Penmans Limited is on the right and London Can Company Limited is on the left.

Notes

Penmans Limited, a branch of a Canadian company whose head office was in Paris, Ontario, was established in London in 1919 to perform certain finishing operations on hosiery and underwear. This London plant closed March 31, 1968 and the building was sold to Shelby Knitwear Limited. Shelby Knitwear Limited closed in 1976. The building was demolished in 1978 as part of the Thames forks beautification project.

The sign on the building on the south west corner of Thames and King Streets identifies this business as London Can Company Limited, which, according to the London City Directories was at this location in 1937 and 1938. It appears that this building was demolished ca. 1954 to make way for a city parking lot.

The London Room photograph index card gives the date for this photograph as ca. 1940.

The photographer's name appears in the bottom right hand corner of the photograph.
