Description
An undated, unidentified black and white group portrait of a hockey team showing the team members in uniforms with striped sleeves and socks and dark jerseys with the team crest of a light "C" on a dark "A" and a small number "12" in the center. Three military officers in uniform sit in the center of the first row wearing tall boots. In the back row the team members are flanked on either side by two gentlemen in civilian clothes. The photograph is taken at an ice arena with wooden seats.
Notes
This team has been identified as a Wolseley Barracks hockey team in the late 1930's. The well known London athlete, Charles Ross "Sandy" Somerville is fifth from the left in the back row. Sandy Somerville (May 4, 1903 - May 17, 1991) was an all-round athlete who excelled particularly in golf, winning six Canadian Amateur Championship golf titles between 1926 and 1937 and was the first Canadian to win the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1932. He was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1955, the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1971, the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1985 and the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.
