Notes
William Bowman, born March 20, 1820 in Liverpool, England, died August 6, 1909 in Port Stanley, Ontario. He came to Canada in 1853 to become mechanical superintendent of the Great Western Railway then under construction from Windsor to Niagara Falls. In 1855 he was appointed superintendent of the London and Port Stanley Railway, retiring in 1875. As an alderman, he served for a time as chairman of finance for city council. (Source: "Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online". More details of his business career and other involvements can be found in this source.)A photograph of Bowman and Co. Coal and Wood Yard, as well as a portrait of his son James H. Bowman, can be found in this digital image gallery.

A guess has been made that this photograph was taken ca. 1875-1885.

For many years he lived at 579 Dundas Street. The map shows the approximate location where his home once stood.
