- A group portrait of Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke, Superintendent of the London Insane Asylum, with his family members and friends, casually posed in a natural wooded area.
- Notes
- With the assistance of Peter Rechnitzer's book: "R.M. Bucke: Journey to Cosmic Consciousness" we know that Harry Buxton Forman, an Englishman who was Dr. Bucke's book editor and friend, visited in 1897 and spent the later part of July with the Bucke family on Liberty Island where they had their summer home. Mr. Forman is in the lower right foreground in this group portrait.
Dr. Bucke, towards the left side of the photograph, is seated on a chair looking regally off to the right. The young man standing slightly to the left behind him is probably his son Will (b.1873), and the two young men standing just to the left of the tree trunk are probably sons Robert (b.1881) on the right, and Pardee (b.1875) on the left. Directly in front of the tree trunk may be daughter Clare (b.1870), and seated in front of her, daughter Ina (b.1877). Jessie, Dr. Bucke's wife is seated just to the right of Clare. The Bucke's son Harold (b.1879) is standing in the far right background.
