Description
A card mounted photograph of the Meadow Lily Mills owned by William Plewes. The letter "P" for Plewes and the date "1886" can be seen on the building. Three children stand on a wagon under a low roof on the front of the building. Another young fellow peers out one of the open windows.
Notes
William Plewes bought Meadow Lily Mills in 1870. In 1885 it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt at once. This new three storey building, made of brick with a high stone foundation, is the building seen in this photograph. In 1891, the mill was again destroyed by fire and rebuilt. William Plewes died in 1895 at which time his son took over the mill. It changed hands in 1901 and in July of that year was again destroyed by fire. It was not re-built. (Source: "Meadow Lily Mills" by Glen Curnoe in the book "The Hamilton Road Collection Volume 2: More memories from Old East" by Carrie Kirkwood.)

This photograph is undated but would have been taken ca. 1886-1890. The photographer's stamp is on the back of the card. There is also a handwritten inscription on the back.

A photograph of William Plewes appears in this digital image gallery as well.
