ii , A“, q“ Page 20 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN' Dog ownership and responsibility By: 6.6. Larry Rutter Owner, Breeder & Trainer of “prying Doss, Those of you who are readâ€" ing this article and 'own' or ’possess' a pet, partiâ€" cularly a dog, where is she/he right now? If this animal is a family pet, who is responsible for its well-being? When did it last receive any kind of human companionship? Does the dog regularly receive words of praise and enâ€" couragement from its master? Who feeds it? How often is the dog groomed or bathed? When were the eyes and ears last groomed and bathed? Has the dog adequate sleepâ€" ing quarters? When was the last time the dog's sleepâ€" ing area cleaned and/ or disinfected? When was the dog last taken to the "Vet" for a general checkâ€"up? When did you last inspect the dog's anal glands? What condition are the dog's teeth in? Does the dog get regular and adequate exercise, under control, accompanied by its master? Every "RESPONSIBLE" dog owner should be very much aware of the above questions. They form th: basis of "RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP“. This applies not only to dogs, but to all animals that have been placed ing the care of a human being. If you have 'found' your pet, he/she is near you, go down on the floor to its level and look the animal in the eye. Be honest, do you LOVE the dog? Do you really WANT him/ her? If you are honest and sincere in answering these questions and situations and the results are positive, then all the questions that I have posed above do not concern you. But if the answers are nega- tive, then you should not have a dog, or any animal, included and considered as a member of your family and household. Over the last ten thousand years, MAN has caused the dog to become the most domestiâ€" cated of all 'animals'. In this period of time, and probably far beyond, the 'dog' has been man's conâ€" stant companion. The dog is a very socialized animal and therefore, when being taken into a 'human' home, or to the dog, a 'pack', he/she very soon tries to find its social level within the new environment. It is the first encouter with its new 'pack' that eventually decides the temperament of the dog. By 'temperament', I mean that the dog is accept- ed into his new home with positive responses to the questions that I have posed above. In a future article, I will go deeper into a question of temperament. PET SERVICES JAYCY KENNELS C.K.C. REG'D. "The Home of the Good Shepherd and Berners." On Wed.,Nov. 22,a delegation of former project leaders from the now defunct Community Conservation Centre Program assembled in Torâ€" onto for a scheduled meeting with James Auld,MPP for Leeds and Min. of Energy and Natural Resources for Ontario. The delegates from across the province were there on behalf of the thousands of people who, over the duration of the CCC Program had indicated their dissatisfaction with the lack of provincial government in" itiative in the area of research and development of renewable en~ ergy resources. A growing number of people in Ontario feel that the Province is effectively committing itself to a nuclear future by neglecting the "soft" energy technologies such as solar, wind and smallâ€"scale hydroâ€"electric, and is making no real effort in the area of ener- gy conservation. People are distressed that the Province of Prince Edward Island, the smallest in Canada, with an estimated iopulation of 125,000, spends more money on renewable energy research than Ontario, the largest and richest province in the country with a population of 8 million! The delegates felt that by comâ€" municating to Mr. Auld our concern. after spending 7 months listening to ideas and complaints, we would put him in touch with what people want, rather than what the governâ€" ment and Ontario Hydro,in their rather questionable wisdom, have decreed as the energy future for Ontario. Well folks, Mr. Auld failed to show! Our MPP and Minister of Energy failed to appear at a meetâ€" ing which had been scheduled for TWO MONTHS. Mr. Auld's executive assistant excused him by saying that he was in a cabinet meeting. This cabinet meetinglfid been in progress for many hours, yet Mr. Auld was unable to excuse himself for even a few minutes to pay us the courtesy of a personal apology. None of the delegates really accepted the excuse, but we realized that we were powerless to do anyâ€" thing. We ended up wasting more of our time in a meaningless discussion with two departmental officials. I wonder if Mr. Auld might have found time to see us had we been 4,, 4.; _; __ *7... -‘4â€".v‘ MANY STORES THESE DAYS ARE SELLING COAL OIL LAMPS BUT WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU NEED ONE RESTORED?
