1' PORTLAND UNITED CHURCH U.C.W. The regular monthly meeting of Portland U.C.W. was held Tuesday evening, November 2lst, in the Church hall.’ Mrs. Vivian Perrin introduced Mrs. Shirley Greene to the group, as guest speaker. Mrs. Greene spoke of the Home Maker Program, how it has been functioning in the past, and explaining how monies have been received to carry on this very worthwhile work. She spoke very highly of the res- ponse of the Council's different organizations and individuals in the area. The Red Cross has been approached to take over the manage- ment and with a lot of persuasion, because of the distance from their headquarters, they are considering setting up a sub-branch in this area. A meeting is to be held Wednesday evening, November 22nd in the Elgin School, giving general information concerning this, and Mrs. Greene heped for a good representation and interest at this meeting. Mrs. Lynne Evans thanked Mrs. Greene on behalf of all the ladies for her very informative and explanatory talk.‘ Mrs. Cora Dowsett, President, opened the business with a prayer. Minutes of the October meeting were read and with a slight correction were approved Roll call was answered by 12 members, giving number of sick visits made. 1 visitor was present. Reports were given by Treasurer, Mrs. Lucille Strong and sick and heapital corre8pondent, Mrs. Hazel Diamond. CbrreSpondence was read, including thank-you notes from Mr. & Mrs. John McDonald and Mr. & Mrs. Glen Rogers. Plans were finalized for looking after sale table at Rideau Craft Christmas sale on November 25th. Moved by Lynne Evans, seconded by Vivian Perrin that the U.C.W. pur- chase the*usua1 items for the Sunday School Christmas pot luck supper. Carried. Mrs. Dowsett closed, reading the prayer, "For the Compassion of Jesus". Mrs. Perrin, Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Vanderschuit were reSponsible for the Devotion. They chose the Candle Advent Service, with Mrs. Perrin reading the part of the leader, Mrs. Evans reading the scripture, and all reading the response. Mrs. Sylvia French played for the hymns. The offering was received and dedi- cated. Mrs. Evans conducted an advent quiz, answers being found from the scriptures which had been read during the service. Lunch was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Sylvia French and Mrs. Pat Carr. A.C.W. PORTLAND The November meeting of the A.C.W. was held at the home of Mrs. Byron Myers, on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. The President, Betty James, Opened the meeting with members' prayer and the Lord's prayer. She gave us an insight into the life the residents enjoy at the home. She also explained how we can help family members to make the trans- ition. Compliments of the Season The Devotional period was conducted by Margaret Stinson and Barbara Bakker. The theme was "contentment" and Remembrance Day. Plans were made for catering to a banquet in December, a bake table at Rideau Crafts Christmas market and Imas gifts for shut-ins.
