The meeting opened with the Ode and Mary Stewart collect. Mrs. Davison was pianist. Roll call was "Something I remember about my grandmother", which was answered by eighteen. Minutes from previous meetings were read and approved. New business was dealt with, and at the Xmas meeting we will be exchanging gifts, also giving gifts to a home for the elderly. This meeting being on our Tweedsmuir history book, Mrs. Davison had a very interesting talk on some of the history of the village and also pictures to look at, for those who had never seen them. Mrs. Hester Freeman donated 3 pictures to the hall, one was the Patrons of Industry of North America in 1894, with some of the names of the persons that helped with the industries of the village. A second picture was about the starting of the Red Cross in 1916, with the women who helped form the Institute. The last picture was one with the names of those joining the Armed Services in the last war. Mrs. Arthur Gile gave an interesting talk on the history of Harlem which was called Smith's Mills. She told of the industries and happenings that used to be in Harlem. Mrs. Ross Stone gave a paper on the history of Forfar. The meeting closed with the Royal Anthem. A delicious lunch was served by the conveners. A vote of thanks by Mrs. Hayes was extended to the special guests and to those who helped with the meeting. Leorene Hayes. \ 1f? Ademonstration of Western and English saddle horseback riding was given by Barbara Horsfall. The children were then given an opportunity to ride. Tours of the Post Office and the Fire Hall were given by Jean Dryre and Paul Iurkowsky respectively. Both the Juniors and Seniors enjoyed films and Hallowe'en treats at their party. Two very large pumpkins which the children had helped carve provided a most appropriate atmosphere, The children also sported masks which they had made during arts and crafts classes. At a recent meeting of parents plans were completed for the Christmas party. Fund raising events discussed in- cluded raffling of a Workmate donated by Black and Decker. The draw rill be December 7. An evening social for parents was planned for December 1. Children of Elgin & District Nursery School enjoy horseâ€" back riding under the dirertirn of Barbara Horsfall. C.N.I.B. CANVASS RESULTS The C.N.I.B. canvass in South Crosby topped last year's figures, with a total of $767.55 collected. The November meeting of Elgin ;U.C.W. was opened by Reta Freeman reading a poem by Helen Steiner Rice. Reta was in charge of the meeting due to the illness of the president, Sandra Freeman. A get- well card was signed by the mem- bers for Sandra. A Worship Service conducted by Marion Seeley, Janet Mills and Irene Guthrie was based on the story oflflary and Martha. We all need to have and balance the use of the qualities and talents of both these women. We listened to the recording by Janet Weiseger and Jane White of the "Ballad of Mary and Martha". A business meeting with the usual reports followed. Final plans for our annual bazaar to be held on Nov. 29th from 2:30 to 6 p.m. were completed. Irene gave the report from the nominating committee and we were happy to know that all positions have been filled with Nina Churchill as first vice-president. Marion reported the final figure fpr our canvass for the blind? to be $787.85--an increase of $100 over last year. A film strip entitled "What In The World Can A Christian Do?" was shown by Anna Charland. -This is an interesting film on stewardship showing various missionaries at work on the proj- ects supported by the Mission and Service Fund to help in various countries concerned. A lunch served by Elsa Emmons' group and a social hour concluded the meeting. CHRISTMAS PARTY Sponsored by the Ladies Auxilliary of the South Crosby Fire Department this party is an annual event for all the children of the Townâ€" ship. Santa will be on hand to pass out goodie bags and the evening will be fun for every- one, with carols and games. Parents are asked to bring along a small gift to place under the tree for their own child.
