North Leeds Lantern INTERIOR DECORATING by Lori Ogle Take the Stress out of Moving In today's society each of us will probably move several times. Often a change of address is fraught with stress as well as anticipated enjoyment. If we follow a few simple guidelines, we can help eliminate the stress. Plan ahead. If you realize you are going to move once, twice or more, buy your furniture and accessories with moving in mind. You'll then be able to take and integrate your existing belongings into almost any milieu. 1. Furniture; Buy small scale furniture, such as love seats instead of a large Chesterfield and chair set. Purchase single chests of drawers rather than double dressers or buffets. Interchangeable furniture should be the rule. The single chests, or Parsons table would be equally right in the living room, hall, dining room or bedroom. If you need a massive look in your. home, you can put two chests together. If you don't have an entrance that will accomodate a Parsons table, it will look great as a serving table in the dining room, a dressing table in the bedroom or as a lamp table behind the loveseat. 2. Colour: Keep the tones of each of the main pieces of furniture neutral; whites, beiges, light greys. They will then harmonize with almost any existing carpet or colour scheme in your new home. For example, if your furniture is beige and your new carpet is rust, you will be able to integrate the carpet by adding rust toss cushions, lamps, a rust border on your drapes or even rust molding at the ceiling. This way, one roll of wallpaper goes a long way. 3. Walls 8: Ceilings: Colour on the walls does wonders, but because we can't take wallpaper with us, we often don't invest in that all important wall treatment. However, thin wood panels covered with fabric or wallpaper can be put up easily and taken down when you move. Following the same idea, we should remember folding screens are a real asset. We can often achieve a more co-ordinated look in our new home by painting the walls. Light pastel colours will help enlarge a room, while darker colours tend to close a room in. A high ceiling can be lowered when painted a deeper shade than used on the walls. 4. Windows: Your covered screens or panels can help camouflage impossible windows. Don't forget to utilize bed sheets, not only for curtains but for bedspreads, head board coverings, tablecloths or cushios.’ With a little planning, a few tricks and very little money, the stress of your move is lessened and you're back together again in your "new" home. It consisted of a demonstration of sewing with knits. It was very informative and everyone learned a great deal from it. We later met at Linda Gibsons to have a birthday party for Judy Pattinson. On Nov. 4, we attended a Pizza party at the home of Sylvia Herlihy. Thanks to the Exemplar Chapter for there hospitality and a good time. Our second meeting in Nov. was held at the home of Jane McCrum. Kathy Arnold brought a pre-cut material for us to make aprons to wear at the Rideau Craft market at the lunch room. Marian Waenick spoke to us about having a toy drive at Christmas time. A donation was made to the Red Cross. Through combined efforts of the Ritual of Jewels and Exemplar Chapters of Beta Sigma Phi we had a very successful lunch room at the Rideau Craft Market. Our final meeting of the year was held on Dec. 6, at the home of Linda Gibson. Heather Clineâ€"Gunneweik had the program. She provided materials for us to make corsages for Christmas. Ritual of Jewels was held for Brenda Smith. We decided to buy toys for some children in the area at Christmas. Hopefully this will make Christmas a little brighter for these needy children.
