8 ”Orth Leeds Lantern PORTLAND & COMMUNITY HALL BOARD The regular meeting was held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1985 with 13 members in attendance. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved. Business arising from minutes was as follows: portable toilets have been removed; cost for summer operation was $280.00; sign is to be removed. Final bill for grass cutting not yet received. Sign is still in preparation; Lamp standardstill to be installed, ,ilikewise Yield sign, steel stabilizer bar on swings. New Horseshoe pits will be dug in the spring and two trees will be removed from beach area this winter. New flag to be obtained through M.P. Cossitt's office. Rinks will be flooded by Firemen this winter and new Notice Board will be constructed and a lock will be installed for same. Key to be left at Post Office. No further information re government dock. New Year's Eve dance will have music by Superior Sound Music Service at cost of $265.00 (same as last year) Novelties and liquor permit to be acquired. Cost will be $18.00/couple. D. Seward not available re refrigerator in bar area, J. Vanluuven to see to outside outlets and light for parking area. Treasurer's report showed $199.01 in general account and $1511.44 in savings account for a total of $1710.45. Correspondence was received from M. Sarazin thanking for use of Hall with payment of $150.00 and request for use next summer. Committee Reports: Custodian reported that firemen had returned table, new fire extinguisher installed, need for panicbar installation on an exterior door. Recreation : R. Baker requested that all recipients of monies from committee must attend a meeting Oct. 24 re use of monies granted. New Business: Annual Ward Meeting to be held Jan. 8, 1986 Budget to be presented at Dec. meeting. Suggested inclusions: new tables for Hall, assistance re paving sidewalks and road way from Fireball to Pizzeria. Closing of Medical Centre: S. McManus to write our concerns re closure to Council and request guidance in this matter as it could impact on Senior Citizen Housing Project. Municipal Elections: The Board felt it should encourage younger people to become involved in Ward and Township operations. It was moved that the Board recommends J. Barker to consider running for Township Council. An All Candidates Meeting to be organized by F. Perrin for one week before election. Fire Dept: will be looking at Emergency 8: Disaster Planning with the Delta Fire Dept. A "Heart Program" will be held to place stickers on bedroom windows of seniors, young people and handicapped residents to easily identify location for assistance in cases of fire or emergency. Firemen will also be patrolling the streets on Halloween in conjunction with the O.P.P. Next meeting Wed., Nov 13, 1985 beginning at 7:30 p.m. TOWNSHIP OF BASTARD AND SOUTH BURGESS COUNCIL NOTES Council met on Mon., Oct. 7 at ‘1:00 p.m. in' the Council Chambers. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Road voucher #9 in the amount of $13,440.44 and general voucher #18 in the amount of $12,226.99 were approved. Authorized Delta Fire Department to sell the old van as is and proceeds to go to the fire dept. Council adjourned. Council met on Thurs., Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Authorized park superintendent to proceed with the installation of a septic system for cottages 5 and 6 and the installation of a new septic system at the fish cleaning station. Authorized park superintendent to research for an architect for construction of a new shower building. Supported a resolution from the Township of Onondaga. Appointed Jane Purdie as Assistant Returning Officer and Barbara Bresee as Election Assistant. Approved three severences and one O.I-I.R.P. grant. Council adjourned to meet again Nov. 4th. PORTLAND U.C.W. Thanksgiving was the theme of the October meeting which was opened with the devotional. Verna gave the benediction. The study this year is on native Indians and Marjorie introduced the filmstrip "As we see it", which told how native people see their contact with Canadian society and showed some ways the United Church relates to them. It also gave us some general information about the Indian culture. Study of this subject will be continued at future meetings. Sylvia FYench opened the business part of the meeting by welcoming everyone and calling for reports of the various committees. Treasurer announced the third installment to M818 had been sent, the 1986 calendars had arrived and would be on sale on Sunday along with church plates and hastinotes. Sylvia reported on the fall Rally held recently at Seeley's Bay when 11 members from here attended. Stewardship was‘ stressed at the Rally and Sylvia spoke of a booklet "The Hundredth Monkey" which she asked all to read. The annual Rally will be held at Kingscourt United on Feb. 25 The Christmas Market will be Nov. 30 at R.D.H.S. and donations for a table there will be gratefully accepted. Members were asked to continue the boycott on war toys. Plans were made to send Christmas cards to tourists who came to church during the year. The next meeting is Nov. 19 at 7:30. Sylvia closed with prayer and a social hour was enjoyed. The first will be a dance - NOVEMBER NOSTALGIA â€" to be held Nov. 16th in the Portland Community Hall. The other function is the lunch room for Rideau Crafts Christmas Market, Nov. 30th. Regular meetings have also featured a variety of cultural programs. These include a presentation on Guiding in Canada by Judy Pattinson, the making of candle holder on bases of birch tree rounds and a slide show and commentary on southern China by Brian Mantrop and Cathy Cashman.
