PHILIPSYILLE _W.L The Philipsville Women's Institute held their October meeting in their hall Oct. 10th. Pres. Theresa George opened the meeting with the Ode and Mary Stewart collect. Roll call was "name a use for trees during their lifespan" and many good answers were given. The guest speaker was Gary Nelson, Brockville from natural resources. He spoke on "the benefits of trees to society at large". He divided the talk into social, economic and ecological. Canada's forest department .is the 2nd lar est in the world. If the forests wer divided up, each man, woman, and child would have 35 acres. There are over 140 kinds of trees. Canada exports 20% of the newspaper used in the world. Mr. Nelson spoke of the benefits of the lumber industry and the different products. Many people don't know that A.S.A. comes from the willow tree, as well as artificial sponges, diapers, raincoats, typewriter ribbons, turpentine, tires, rayon, garbage bags and even ice (ream. The greatest uses of trees are holding the soil in place so it doesn't blow away and the oxygen we all breath. If acid rain is not controlled in time the trees will be dead. Old business and new business were handled, bills were paid. Christmas carol books are to be ordered. A report from the area convention held in Napanee, was given by Veta Bolton. Our idea for a part in Delta Fair was discussed and Veta will take it to the executive Nov. 5th in the community . room, Elgin. The program continued with Leorene reading a poem "Trees Speak to us of God". Singing of the national anthem closed the meeting. A contest was held on trees and Marion Stone was the winner. North Leeds Lantern page 5 PHILIPSVILLE NEW OUTREACH The New Outreach Neighbours "Wheels to Meals" meeting was held in the Institute Hall, Oct. 3rd with a good attendance. Guest speaker was Mrs. Cheong, Portland who spoke on the new volunteer group that has been formed. If you can spare some time to go and read, shop, visit, write letters, etc. for someone, contact her and she will tell you what she wants. Mary said Grace and everyone enjoyed a steak dinner and trimmings. Clela Haskin was the birthday person for the month. A sing song was enjoyed with Mrs. Haywood at the piano. Games Followed.
