MARY BATI‘AHS GZ LADIES AUXILIARY ZONE COMMANDER PRESENTING A PAST PRESIDENT'S MEDAL & BAR TO RETIRING GRACE TRYON OF BRANCH 491 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION SEELEY'S BAY SEELEY'S BAY LEGION President Orvin Martin played host to 61 members and guests at our June 16 Past President's Dinner and Honours and Awards Night. The Master of Ceremonies and guest speaker for the evening's event was Comrade Len Whiteford, whom I found to be extremely amusing. Following V dinner, President Orv called for a well deserved round of applause for our catering officer, Velma Turner and her assistants. Branch Immediate Past President, Les Smyth, then gave an account of President Orv's many achievements in the past year, and all were very appreciative that Comrade Orv Martin was taking on this monumental task for a second year. Thanks Comrade Orv. The floor was then turned over to Honours and Awards Chairman, Roy Talboys, who, assisted by Comrade Bob Hope, issued service pins to Comrades G.S. Darling, John Smith, Clifford Smith, Gil Lesage, Russ Stapleton, and Joe Turner. Zone Commander, Bill Nolan, was then called upon to present well deserved Life Memberships to Comrade Joe Turner and Comrade Terry Carlo. This is one of the Royal Canadian Legion's highest awards. President June Smith of the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 491, assisted by their Zone Commander, Mary Battams, then presented a 151: Vice President bar to Comrade Martha Bennett; a 2nd Vice President bar to Comrade Hilda Talboys; a Sgt.-atâ€"Arms bar to now President June Smith; and the highlight of the event was the presentation of a Past President's medal and bar along with a beautiful plaque to the new Immediate Past President, Grace Tryon. This reporter has yet to get a picture of Past President Grace presenting a cheque to Branch President Orv in the amount of $1,200.00, but this reporter knows what a great asset and friend Comrade Grace and her Auxiliary have been to Branch 491 during her years as President. Thanks Comrade Grace. It was a delight to see so many past presidents in attendance, along with their wives and friends. They were Comrades Sanford Gray, Terry Carlo, John Robertson, Bill Nolan, Joe Turner, Don Charbonneau, Les Smyth, and Len Whiteford. A dance followed the ceremonies and, all in all, it was a very pleasant evening enjoyed by all.
