The completion of the ninth edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica is to be cele- brated by a dinner, to be ^iven at Cam- bridge, some time this month. Professor Robertson Smith, who al n? survives of the chief editors, is to be the host on this oc- casion. Some time ago a teacher, on anawering a knock at the school door, found one of her pnpila wrapped up to protect her from the rain. " Teacher, mother says I needn't come to school to-day 'cause it rains," and down-stairs the little maid fled like a fright- ened deer. " See here, Bruff," said the editor to the proof-reader, "you've got me in a nice box, you have." ' "How's that, sir?" "Why, I wrote that there was a grand parade of uniformed voters last night at Hodgeville and you've printed it ' uninform- ed voters.'" " Oh, no, air. you came in before I did," " I'm sure I'm not next," sniffed an old lady. " I ahall have to give up my turn," aaid another, regretfully. "I've stayed here longer than I ought already." Many of the papers have recently given up much space to the discnssion of the ratiier useless question " Is Marriage a Failnre T' Many of the opinions aired on t|ps topic are amnsing â€" many of them absnrd.. But it is noticeable that in nearly every case where the union discussed is an unhappy one, the causes for ite failure are very simple. In the majority they are simply selfishness or bad temper, often both. And there are few unhappy marriages which could not be ren- dered more bearable if both husband and wife made more effort in self-restraint, " Only temper" is responsible for many un- happy lives. Fittobnrg is in despair. The borsling of the greao oast-steel gun at Annapolis the other day has burira the entire city in gloom. "People of all classes,*' says a Pitts- burg paper, "appeared to teke it as a personal matter.' That Brobdignagian monster was Pittsburg's iiet. It was expect- ed to close the estebliSimente of Krupp and Armstrong and all other buUders of built- up cannon. It, was to make Pittsburg the city' of great gunx, the chief creator of chill- ed -steel destroyers, Thisrefore when that enormous lump cf highly protected metal was trundled off to be tasted by the Govern- ment every Pittsburger wished it good luck. For weeks the citizens had bragged about the gun in public places and at their own fireaidea. They loved it for the enemies it %ronld reduce to mlaoe-meat. Fortunately through an oversight they neglected to name it "Ben Harrison." When the knowing Grovemment ordnance officers at Annapolis had loaded that precious piece of hardware they retired to bomI)proofs and adjacent Stetes to watoh the result of the firing. Fifty pounds of powder and 1(X) pound ball had been pushed down the Pittsburger's throat. The lanyard was pulled and the result wasâ€" chaos. Pittaburg'a pride was reduced to rcrap iron. It was ready for the junk shop. Erupp and Armstrong had not been driven out of business. Pitteburg's beautiful dream had become a hidoeus night mare.
