Speaking of colds, I have a theory that no one need ever hive onennleaa he chooses: m other words, that it u quite possible so to tram the skin, that wonderful wgan which 18 generally looked upon as the paper wrapper to our human bundle, as to rrader It non-susceptible to sudden chngea of tem- perature or atmospheric moisture, whence colds come. And as this is exactly the season to com- mence such a system of pellar education, as it has proved effective in many instances within my own knowledge, and as it is with- in easy reach of every one to try, I write it here. The theory is that no skin that has been exposed freely for half an hour at the beginning of a day to a temperature lower than it will encounter through the day, will note small changes or be affected there- by. A cold is simply a nervous shock, received by the myriads of minute nerve terminals that bristle over the surface of the human body, transmitted to the centers and so back again to mucous membrane, the pecu- liar seat of this special irritation. Let us then so train these sensitive fibres that they will pass by, unnoticed, changes of atmo- spheric condition, and the matter is accom- plished, WOMAN'S WAIS. It is reported in Topeka that Mayor Metsker-will appoint Mrs. M. E. DeGeer, the well-known fiemale lawyer, as police judge. Mrs. Maria White, an old friend of the Beecher family, has rented the house of Henry Ward Beecher, and will let the furnished rooms to lodgers. Victor Hugo siid " The nineteenth century belongs to woman. In the twentieth century, war, the scaffold, hatred, royalty and dogma will have died out, but man will live." The latest California boom story is of in- terest to the fair sex. It says a Mrs. Hen- derson recently found a §20 gold piece in the streets of Los Angeles, invested the same in a suburban corner lot, and in a fortnight realized the handsome sum of §1,250. A statue of Liberty is to be erected on a peak in San Francisco, which is to be lighted by electricity and will be 1,000 feet above the sea. Thus the two most impor- tant ports on both sides of the country will have a statue of Liberty in each case repre- sented as a woman. Miss Henrietta Brooke Davis, in the Nineteenth Century, advises the establish- ment by women of a college in which the duties of the household, the art of cooking, etc., may be taught. 'The great advantage of this will be that it will raise the standard of domestic service, Dr, Elizabeth Beatty, of Indcre, sent out by the Presbyterian Church in Canada as a medical missionary, has treated over 6,0C0 patients in the past twelve months, and thinks a hospital and training school for Hindoo women would make thousands of converts to Christianity, All the training schools for nurses in Philadelphia are free. This is one profes- sion for women that is not over-crowded, and where women can earn good wages. The chief qualifications are good health, good temper, general intelligence, and a fair common-school education, Ida Lewis Wilson still keeps the old boat in which she saved thirteen people, and, shabby as it looks, she uses it, and says if she were again to have the opportunity to rescue the drowning she'd take the old boat rather than the handsome new one present- ed her by the citizens of Newport. Twenty thousand women Knights of Labor are organized, in the city of New Y'ork alone, for mutual protection. Like the fabled Amazons, they are ready to assert and defend their rights, but not, as they did with, the sword. They will be com- pelled to demand the ballot for their own defense, and when they do the great army of organized labor will rally to the irside. INTESEBTINa ITEMS. The £tll« and gwden vwetablee of La Vendee and tbe Lower Nohr, ViHwe, are being devMtated by » new cat«arpillar plague which hu already destroyed aU the winter food for cattle. The Princess of Wales has consented to become the patroness of the ladies, depart- ment of King^ College, Bngland. This department was established e^t years ago, and the lectures are now attended by four hundred women. Mr. France De Lanne of Sharsted Court, county Kent, has attracted to himself the admiring eyes of the British nation by suc- cessfully raising and harvesting a crop of tobacco. It is said to be the first ever raised in England. The Government has graciously given consent that he shall go on with his experiment, bnt insists that he must pay duty on his crop the same as though the tobacco were imported. The wife of a prominent citizen of Bir- mingham, Conn,, caught fourteen pounds of blackfish in front of her seaside cottage at Ansonia, the other day, and would have caught more if a two pounder hadn't broken her tackle. But this fish didn't get away for, when she saw that there was danger that he would, she waded into the water, and, using her skirts as a landing net, brought the fish in triumph tor^he shore. There is still running in good condition on the Auburn branch of the New York Central Railroad the car in which Abraham Lincoln rode from Buffalo to Albany on his way to Washington for his first inaugura- tion. The ceiling is decorated with the national flag, and at one end is a portrait of Lincoln and at the other one of Washing- ton, The car, now known as No, 540, was new in February, 1861, and was decorated for the purpose of cairying the President. The First Surrey Rifles of the British Army, are giving a burlesque performance of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. It was given first at Wimbledon, and was so suc- cessful that it had to be repeated before the Duchess of Albany, .Lord and Lady Wantage, and other distinguished spectators and now the soldiers are giving it as a pre- lude to their promenade concerts. Whereat a London paper regretfully remarks that "Nothing is sacred to the satirist or the burlesquist," The Society of the Sidney Presbyterian Church in Illinois is composed wholly of women. They built a handsome little chapel and dedicated it substantially free from debt. There were no men to hold the offices, which have been vacant a year. The little church became a sort of elephant on the hands of the Bloomington presbytery, which recently appointed a committee to complete the organization. The question whether women are eligible to all the offices necessary to a complece organization is under consideration. Otter Belt, one of the greatest of Co- manche chiefs, died in Indian Territory a few days ago. Five minutes before his death they held him erect and rigged him out in his best war costume. They painted him red, set his war bonnet on his head, tied up his hair in beaver skins, and Uid him down just as he died. Then his five wives took sharp butcher knives, slashed their faces with deep cuts, cut themselves in other places, and beat their bleeding bodies and pulled their hair. They also burned every- thing they had, tepees, furniture, and even most of the clothing they had on, A big crowd of buqkslook 'd on and killed tenhorsed, including a favorite team of Fress Adding- ton, on whose ranch Otter Belt lived. The first young girl to be cremated in America was 9 year- old Alida Weissleder, the daughter of the superintendent of the Brush Electric Light Company in Cincinnati, Her body was burned last week at the crematory in that city. The corpse, wrapped in white alum linen, with white and yellow roses on the breast, was slid into the retort by two attendants, who at once retired, and in the stillness that followed the mourners could hear the puff and si^le of the gases of the body as the heat devoured it. After an hour the blue flames stopped circling about the body, and a long white streak was seen where it had been. These ashes, when gathered up, weighed less than a pound. They were returned to the parents and will be preserved in an urn. It was the ninth incineration at the cematory. A Fertinent Inqniiy.
