' Cigarettes. I Whether or not young Mr. Knevals died i smoking cigarettes, it is perfectly well pown to physicians .that a man may die nm carrying that practice to an excess, 1 that excessive cigarette smoking does Di great deal of harm. In the first place, Nple who smoke cigarettes do more smok- gthan those who use cigars and pipes. If I mm is going to leave his ofilce to run i the street for a minute, or is walking p the corner to take a horse cai he will not jght a cigar he knows it must be thrown fvj immediately, and a sense of economy trains him. But if he is in the habit of )lliiig cigarettes, he may take a whiff at ky time, and is pretty 'sure to be always W it. The result is that where a non- poker has the benefit of some fresh air in whenever he is out of doors, the Iprette smoker takes in air charged with tcotme. I aokers of cigars and pipes do not, as a Vie, inhale smoke, but cigarette smokers Y Why this should be, it is difficult to k. but it is an acknowledged fact that it p. Two enterprises now under way in Africa bid fair before many months to give us some interesting information about the two largest regions that are still entirely nnexplored. On the latest maps of the Congo Independent State it may be observed that fully one-half of the territory between the Sankuru River and the great northern bend of the Congo is entirely blank. It is this region which Lieut. Wissmann set ont to explore in No- vember last. News has just been received of the arrival of tifis able explorer early in April. at Lake Tanganyika. He had passed several months in the unknown, countries between his former route across the con- tinent and Grenfell's riverine researches on the north. He intended to reach the Indian Ocean by way of Lake Nyassa and the ZambesL When he retuma to Europe he vrill have travelled twice acroas the continent from west to east. It is believea the region he has visited is very popnionand that he will bring home much interesting infor- ma^on. ' West of the Gulf of Guinea, and partly sur- rounded by districta that have been visited by many travellers, is agreat ^hite space on the maps. In this is the hypothetical Lake Liba, but we are not certain that this supposed large lake exists, nor have we a particle of reliable inf ormajtion about a region that is as large as the State of New York. A few weeks ago Kund and Tappenbeck, who have done excellent work in the Congo basin, started for Cameroon for the purpose of exploring this country. They will doubt- less be able to settle some important ques- tions. Germany acquired a. pig in a bag when she extended her sovereignty over this region, of which she knew nothing, and these explorers have been sent out by the Govemnent Xo ascertain what sort of a countrv the new German possessions may be. "at!?: Htunan Fly Catchers- Fly catehers have a busy time of it in Paris just now. â-  The calling is not a recognized or classified one, nor do parente as a rule bring their sons up to it. But there are hundlbds of experienced bands employed at it during the dog days, and a good haul of flies is often profitable enough. The fly cateher is generally a deolasse or a good-for-nothing rascal from the suburban lanes and alleys, who does not want to leave Paris, aud is too lazy to go into the country for the hay making or the harvesting. Some- times he is a person who unites in himself a variety of callings, being by turns a comer errand runner, a bootblack, a dog shaver and clipper, or even a.froUeur or floor-wax- er out of employment. „ tx His modus operandi is as follows He takes a tolerably large-sized box with a little hole in ita top, and stations himself outeide a grocer's shop where the winged insecte are busily buzzing against the window panes on the lookout for stray drops of mo- lasses or chance grains of brown sugar. These the cateher dexterously imprisons m his palm, in the schoolboy fashion, and, dis- locating sdme of their antennae, puta them into his boL Sometimes he U aUowed to pursue his calling inside the shop when cus- tomers are not numerous, and is thus enabled to fill his box with celerity. ,.. j r After a few hours of this exciting kind of sport he goes off with his spoU and disposes of it to the people who seU or keep birds. His best and most open-handed customers are the frail denizens of the Quarter Breda or the Quarter de I'Europe, all of whom keep the feathered pete. They often pay so good a price to the flycatcher for his spoil that he is enabled to go home after a sSccMsful day with ample J»^ pocket to defray the cost of W and board for half a week in one of his dingy haunts. -^ 'â-  â€" Dans^eroosly Hart- Commi«ioner 0« •fcat ^nnd do yon claim a pension Were |wi in the army iJpliSnt Oh, no the war was all over Wore I was bom. She was back in London in time for Monday night's play. An immense drainage work undertaken by the Russian Government contemplates the recovering of the vast region known as the Pinsk marshes, in the southwest of Russia, near the borders Gallicia, and which hitherto has prevented communication, not only between the Russian districta on either side, but also between Russia and Austro-Germany. Up to the present time about 4,000,000 acres have been reclaimed by means of the .construotian of several thousand miles of ditehes and canals. The Crown Prince of Germany, while present at the Spithead naval review on boatrd the Queen's yacht, met the ex-£m-. press Eugenie, who, as the guest of the Queen, was also admiring the magnificent spectacle from that vessel. The la;st prev- ious occasion on which the Crawn Prince had met Eugenie, then Empress of France, was at' the festivities which took place on the opening of the Suez Canal in November, 1889â€" an interval of eighteen yearii crowd- ed full of eventa for both the Empress and the Prince. The interesting statement is made in the last munibipal reporta of the corporation of Chelsea, near London, that, contrary to what has generally been assumed in the relations of occupation and health, the sew- ermen of that place show marvellous health and vitality, notwithstanding they spend seven hours daily in the sewers, often in cramped up positions, dealing with offen- sive and dangerous matter. Obe of the sewer men, who is now pensioned off, is eighty-six years old, and was a sewefman for more than twenty-eight years another, who is yet at work, is twenty-four, and has followed this occupation more than thirty years. Russian archieologista, who are under the patronage of the Czar, are working throughout the empire or wherever the im- perial armies open np new fields. They have done much during the past decade to illuminate dark blanks in Byzantine and earlier records. One of the most interesting of their discoveries just comes to me through a private letter. At Tashkend have been recently found extensive Greek remainsj^ chiefly terra cotta vases, silver gillT orna- menta, and small statuettes, ul purely Hellenic, and obviously bespeaking a com- mon domestic use. This discovery shows that the frontiers of the Greek Kingdom in Bactria must have extended many hundred miles further northeast than has been sup- posed. Probably it is the beginning of a series of developmente giving to Central Asia an entirely novel arehaeclogical in- terest. $1,000 For the Sick and Poor.
