Wherd -ivlli t^r nm *iiiâ€" iil- KoUrn JiUHs, Hrim SkNnitf or colli Agw**^]^^ It is reported that the new iiron steamers of the C. P. E. for the up- per lakes draw too much water (15 feet) for the harbor at Algoma Mills, and that the Canadian Pacific have had to abandon the idea of nrahing them between that place and Port Arthur, and that instead they will be run from Owen Sound or Oollingwood to Port Arthur. As soon as the Ou- tario and Quebec is finished to Torou- l to (it will be ready for freight before the opeDin.; of navigatiou) th • j Syndicate will then have a system cf their own from the Atlantic to the Rocky mountains. That is over the eastern section of the Canadian Paci- fic railway from ^Montreal to Perth, the Ontario Quebec to Toronto, the Toronto Grey Bruce to Owen Sound steamers to Port Arthur, and the Canadian Pacific railway thence to the Eocky Mountains. Algoma Mills is near the Sank, between Owen Sound and Port Arthur, and the in- tention was to extend the line from Callendar thereto, and run the steam- ers between that place and Port Ar- thur. By that route none of the freight will pass through Toronto. But if the steamers are not able to enter Algoma Mills harbor the Owen Sound route yia Toronto will have to be employed. The people of the Hamilton and Nortwestern are favoring Collingwocul rather than Owen Sound as the On- tario terminus of the steamers, as they say it is a better harbor.. The freight would then pass through To- ronto as before, but it would only go up the Toronto, Grey Bruce until it crosses the Hamilton Northwes tern, and thereon to CoUingjvood. The CulUngwood papers say that the superintendent of construction of the works at Algoma Mills was in Col- lingwood looking into the matter the other day, and that he then went ou to Owen Sound, where certain im improvements are already in course of construction. The most certain statement in re- gard to the matter is that the Canada Pacific railway will have a through line of their own by April fmm Mon- treal to tbe Eocky Mountains, and that they are pushing everything for- ward in that du-ection. Incendiary Attempt. â€" On Tuesday morning, Mr. Scott, caretaker of the Hill Street School House, on going as usual to the building, about 7 o'clock, he found, the front door open, and entering the large school room, found all the chairs piled up around a wooden post together with papers and copybooks, and pieces of a broken bench. Going into the room in the dim twilight, he thought it looked strange, end struck a match, but before it turnedout, the pile of mater- ials around the post burst into ablaze, which he quickly extinguished. The incendiary, who must have entered by on« of tbe rear windows, had made a fire in the stove, and afterwards probj ably placed coals in the pile around the post, and then left by the front door, unbolting it from the inside. Had the fire been set erlier, or if Mr. Scott had net entered at the op- portune moment he did, the school might haye been burned. It is hard to imagine what motive any oive could have of such ita act. â€" 0,8, Times.
