Everything quiet and very dull. J. W. Elliott expects to be in his new shop by Christmas. McClery McTeer are turning out a large number of sleighs hope 'they may not be dissapointed in making sales for wont of snow. Came to town, by a cow on her horns, part of a ladies wearing apparel. The owner can have it by proving property. Tuck McLeod have started busijiess in the Chatsworth House. To the Public. A Change of Time. Until now there have been fifty- two differences of time in this county un- der the new arrangements there will only be five differences, these bemg goyerned by five meridians. The principle on which the new system is based will be easily under- stood if the reader rememberB that the earth circling on its own axis brings in succession its three hundred and sixty degrees of circumference to the light of the sun every day. There being twenty-four hours lu the day, fifteen degrees of the whole three hundred and sixty must thus pass a fixed point in the heavens every hour. Therefore, a person travelling finds a difference of one hour for every fifteen degrees â€" nine hundred miles â€" travelled. The intermedidate localities, one, two, or three degrees from his starting point, haye had a proportion- ate difference in time. Now, under the new system, each meridian ot fifteen degrees will have a ur^iform time for all places within it, and the difference between one meridian and the other will be exectly one hour. The change has been made, indeed, in the interest of simplicity, and it will prevent the confusion that has some- times arisen from the great variation of time between cities as closely linked as Boston and New York. THE BEST PLACE TO GET i North of Toronto, is at the IMLarkdale GJ-allery, I hereby return thanks to my num- erous customers tor their liberal pat- ronage during the year in which I have been in the saw mill business, and would respectfully solicit a continu- ance of the same. Having now my mill fitted up in first class con- dition, I am in a position to give my customers the best satisfaction in lum- ber and shingle sawing. Special at- tention to bill stuff. The highest mar- ket price paid for 50,000 Hemlock, Basswood, Pine and all kinds of hard- wood logs. Hoping by strict atten- tion to business and fair deahng to merit a continuance of your patronage. I am, your respectfully, Jas. a. Duncan. Bell Brook Mill.Dec.lO. '83. Osprey. From our own corresvondent. Mr. Geo. Blackburn, shoemaker, has left Maxwell and gone to Fever- sham where he will oppose brother Mitchell Son, having hung out his shingle on the opposite side of the riyer. Mr. J. Hamilton who has for past years run the grist mill at Feversham is leaving that village. Hall Bros, have engaged Mr. Arch, Grey, of Fergus, as their successor. Revs. Dobson and Hall are con- ducting revival meetings in Fever- sham, and Mr. Shaw at Bucking- ham, Black squirrels are plentiful, we saw one on M. Richardson's new brick block at Flesherton, recently. Hickling grange will hold their annual meeting on the 11th inst., for the election of officers for the ensuing year. The weather is plentiful and vari- ed, the roads ditto. District Dasher. That's so, for a friend of mine had his taken there and he says they are even better than what he had taken in Toronto. We are glad to learn the editor of the Orangeville Oazett lias recovered from his late severe illness. The Swan estate of Mt. Forest has been purchased by Mr. Jas. Honey, of that town. Mr. Robert JWalker, a pioneer of Osprey, died Nov. 22, at the age of 85 years. The Postmaster General has in- creased the idemnity of the Dundalk post ofiice from ^265 to $400. Mount I'orest merchants have agreed to close their places of busi- ness during winter, at 7 o'clock p. m. Messrs. Neilson of Proton station have commenced purchabing grain at Flesherton Station. A full report of the seasons opera- tions of theDundalk cheese factory is given in the Herald of last week, and is said to be yery satisfactory to the patrons. CoUingwood merchants will close their stores at 6 p. m. during the winter. The people cf Tara are anxious for a railway communication with Owen Sound, and the chances appear to be favorable. A E!on of Mr. John Corbet, of Owen Sound, broke his leg while sleighrid- ing last week in that town. Owen Sound favours connection with Tara by rail, rather than Dur- ham. The Ontario and Quebec. It is likely that this road will be ironed and bridged right through to Perth before February 1st aud that on that dute freight tvill be i un over it to Ottawa. It is not probable that passengers traffic can be accommo- dated before July 1st by which time the ballasting ought to be completed. When that is done Toronto and Ottawa will not be more than seven hours apart with the tendency in the direction of still further reduction. â€" Toronto World.
